Creativity: What childhood taught me – Being alone is good

You will not find happiness with others until you find it with yourself. Fortune cookie saying? Sometimes. Sometimes repeated in every journey-to-self book, too.

Wherever you read this, it’s true.

At some point in our lives we will be alone and in those moments we must recognize ourselves. Give ourselves permission to, well, fly is the word that comes first to mind. Be free. Paint our walls whatever we want. Have any colour sheets we desire. Sing and dance because, literally, no one is watching.

Sit in quiet – without all the beeps and tweets and buzz of our devices – and recharge.

What does this have to do with creativity?

Simply, if you’re never alone, comfortable being alone, how can you hear yourself? How can you discover what you’re capable of creating? Of bringing your voice to a group.

Being alone is a skill we all need to learn.
