I loved the LOTR movies. Couldn’t stand the books. Love Clive Barker’s books. Movies based on his books – not so much.
Harry Potter? Both mediums worked for me.
There’s a Facebook meme of an iceberg, the part above the water being the movie. The hidden parts below being the book. I agree. There’s always more to the book than any movie. Okay, I’ll correct that – almost always.
The same goes for television. This medium has introduced me to books…Perry Mason, Louis L’Amour, and Bernard Cornwell’s Sharpe series. Okay, that series was watched due to Sean Bean, which is an even longer trip to discovering books.
The book JAWS by Peter Benchley prompted a movie…a series of them. Sadly, a mass fear and killing of sharks, too. Maybe more from the movie than the book. However, many have stated this book and the movies prompted them to ocean studies.
My point – these mediums will forever be interlinked and the argument over which is better will never end, never be answered. Plus they will always have some impact on our lives whether we admit it or not.
BTW…thank you, whomever started Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys.
Well stated. My position is that some books are brilliantly crafted (or have a brilliant plot), and some are…okay. Ditto for movies. For me, most books strike my fancy, and I'll subsequently watch the movies, like the Bourne series. This one is a great, neverending argument, all the more fun for engaging us!
Thanks, Chuck. And sometimes the idea is fantastic, but the original medium just didn't carry it for a person while another will 🙂
I thought the Harry Potter books were much better than the movies, but I also enjoyed the movies. As a rule I think the books are usually more interesting than the movie. Although with Midsomer Murders. I can't imagine the books being as exciting.
Chris, have you ever read any of my Kay Driscoll mysteries? I'd be interested in what you thought. 😉
Hi, Susan. Thanks for dropping over. I have to admit after posting this I did stop and rethink Harry Potter, there were a few things the movies missed, but probably one of the better book-movie adaptations I've seen.
I just remembered reading the "Murder She Wrote" books and was disappointed. Now you have me wanting to turn Midsomer Murders on 🙂
You are on my list to read…deeper read than just during submissions 🙂
Chris, if you do watch Midsomer Murders, my absolute favorite episode is "Written in Blood." It is the first episode after the Pilot. Included in the murder mystery is a story about authors and writing. I have watched it many times. I think you would love this episode as much as I do. 🙂
We have all 100+ episodes.
Just found it on Netflix…all 17 season and the Written in Blood episode…thanks, dangit do I really have to work today ;(
Lol! It will be a great movie to watch Saturday evening. We reserve Saturday evenings for Midsomer Murders. The movies are two hours long.
Going through Nick and Nora movies and Poirot…having two computer screens…yup, I cheat LOL
