It’s All In The Words…Or Is It?

This past week I’ve been in and out of the Muse Writers Conference and something clicked when checking out a publishers’ website.

Book covers.

How many times have I picked up a book and just read the back blurb without looking at the cover? Most times, if I’m honest.

Allow me to be clear; this is very different from when I’m reviewing a book, then I pay more attention to the cover. I have more time, too.

But in a bookstore with shelves upon shelves of books with their spines facing me, sorry I don’t have enough time to pull each and every book out. Because I rarely look at a cover before choosing, I’ve turned into a title gal. Okay, once in awhile, bright cover colours or a simple nothing cover have grabbed my attention.

Well, today I saw a book cover that is still haunting me. DEAD SOULS at http://www.morriganbooks.com/ is crisp in its creepiness. This book is on my Xmas list (mind you, I have no idea how I’ll hold this book to read it—yes, it is that shiver-making)

So, I ask you…how much attention do you pay to the artists’ creative work? I’ve learned this weekend; I need to pay more attention and my apologies for not doing so before now.

  1. If a cover isn't attractive or inviting, usually a shopper doesn't look at the interior.

4RV has many talented artists who work with us.

They usually work from a synopsis or full manuscript for a cover idea. Of course they work with a complete manuscript for illustrating a book.

I can't list all the contact information because of the length of illustrators we use.

If you see a cover on our site that you like, let me know, and I'll get the information for that person.

Aidana WillowRaven is the Art Director, and her contact info is [email protected]

    Hope that helps.

  2. Hi, Vivian.

Sure does. I feel a little foolish this light bulb didn't go offer earlier, but better now than never.

Ideas are abounding within my mind…will be in contact soon with some.

So much about art that my teachers never taught.

    Thanks

  3. Okay Chris, that got my attention. But only for a split second, while I changed the page. It IS that creapy. If I were to buy the book (which I would NOT) I'd have to grab a roll of contact paper and recover it. Not about to take a risk of seeing that picture more than once. EVER. YUK!

Book covers can be a turn off, too.

  4. Hey, Jan.

Took me a moment before I figured out what you meant…read through my email first 🙂

Yes, book covers can do that, too. I tend to leave books with embracing couples alone, even if in my reading genre.

    Thanks for coming by
