Honestly, this isn’t a nice posting. I’m not going to sound or come across as being nice. I actually expect some people to be shocked at how un-nice I will be.
Cause frankly, what has being nice done for me?
No, this isn’t a rant or venting or negative-filled oh poor is me. Far from it. It’s part of my truth…what has being nice done for me?
What does nice mean? Wow, it sure doesn’t mean everything we think it does…unless you read the dictionary.
Sure, we know the – pleasing, agreeable, appropriate, socially acceptable, well-bred, polite, kind, virtuous. Even its synonyms are sugar-sweet – befitting, correct, decent, proper, seemly.
Did you know it also has listed – wanton, dissolute, coy, “showing fastidious or finicky tastes,” “exacting in requirements or standards.”
Not exactly the nicest things you could call someone.
And let’s not forget the saying – nice guy finishes last. Or, how nice characters are boring whether in writing or acting.
With all that in mind, who would want to be nice? If we did why the line – And, no more Mr. Nice Guy.
WOW, in searching some information for this posting I found this quote by Penn Jillette…yes that Penn of Penn & Teller:
“…Tolerance is you saying something crazy and me smiling and saying ‘that’s nice.’…”
I don’t want to be tolerated. Don’t go giving me a pat on my head and send me on my way. Don’t do that smile and nod and then just walk away as if you’ve done your duty by/with/for me.
I’m worth more than that.
I want you to stop and think on the last time you thought or used the word, nice. Was it because it was the best word. Or…and I think more likely…it’s because you couldn’t think of any other word worthy enough for what you were honestly thinking and ‘nice’ is such an easy throw away word.
Guess what, maybe the next time you hear me say ‘nice’ to you, you should stop and wonder, just what did she mean by that.
