What’s my responsibility, as a reviewer, when it comes to what crosses my lines? What if something doesn’t register with me as being a line crossing, but crosses a reader’s line?
When I picked this topic I wasn’t sure how to start or whether I could find something to write that fits as a reviewer. Now that I’ve asked these two questions, I really don’t know how to continue. I hadn’t thought about this topic along these questions.
Reviews are one person’s opinion. This is something most authors realize. Every reader is different and what may bother one wouldn’t faze another.
So how does a writer do?
Write the story to the best of their ability. Take the advice of their beta readers, critique group, editor(s) and publisher. Dissect their manuscript and pull out the strongest images and story and leave the shock value aspects behind.
What do I do as a reviewer? Speak from my view and experience and trust…like the author must…our readers.
