Of course.
Everything benefits from edits whether you’re checking for typos, spelling, missing periods or commas. And making sure you have the write word 😉 Yes, that was on purpose.
Poetry and prose, for me, are flowing words for expression of my emotions. I don’t know how anyone will read them and some may say that is why I need to edit. To make it clear for the reader. I disagree because the first poem I ever read brought an emotional response not a mindful one. And that’s how it impacted my writing.
With all that explained, you still need to work your poem to the best it can be – for you. Sometimes when writing I’ll use a word I know isn’t what I want, but I’ll go back and relook to find the one that sits perfect with me.
My style maybe free form but that doesn’t mean it’s just tossed together…in the final.
Which reminds me – all the poems I’ve shared have not reached their final wording.
Back to edits and writing.
Great post, Chris! Something to think about.
I agree the author should edit for typos, spelling, etc.
The raw thoughts shouldn't be edited. Otherwise, what's the sense of writing poetry. 🙂
Hi, Susan…Thank you and thanks for coming by. I do agree and love the raw thoughts. Mine need editing because I tend to use the same words when I know I mean something more/different.
