I’ve meditated for years and did so during my initial cancer stage. One day I forgot who my guide was and this is what I concentrated on.
I travelled through a hallway and found my dad’s spirit watching over my daughter. We smiled at each other as he was exactly where I needed him to be.
I travelled past a closed door and knew who was behind it, but she was needed there caring for family gone before her. I knew this and accepted, it was where I also needed her to be.
I continued on to the end of the hallway and opened the next door and there…of course, how could I have forgotten…was my Pa, maternal grandfather, waiting. Strange, my great-uncle Red walked past me, patted my shoulder and said something about – don’t worry, we’ve got you – and disappeared. I’ve never experienced my great-uncle Red during my meditations before.
When my Pa died, I was eighteen, the first song I heard and which has struck me as ours was “Your Needed Me” sung by Anne Murray.
Dad and I had a different song, but lately “Papa, Can You Hear Me?” sung by Barbra Streisand has been playing in my mind.
Believe what you will, but I know my guardian angels. The ones watching me, reminding me.
Papa, Can You Hear Me?
Barbra Streisand
God, our heavenly Father
Oh God, and my father
Who’s also in Heaven
May the light
Of this flickering candle
Illuminate the night the way
Your spirit illuminates my soul
Papa, can you hear me?
Papa, can you see me?
Papa, can you find me in the night?
Papa, are you near me?
Papa, can you hear me?
Papa, can you help me not be frightened?
Looking at the skies
I seem to see a million eyes
Which ones are yours?
Where are you now that yesterday
Has waved goodbye
And closed its doors?
The night is so much darker
The wind is so much colder
The world I see is so much bigger
Now that I’m alone
Papa, please forgive me
Try to understand me
Papa, don’t you know I had no choice?
Can you hear me praying
Anything I’m saying
Even though the night is filled with voices?
I remember ev’rything you thought me
Ev’ry book I’ve ever read
Can all the words in all the books
Help me to face what lies ahead?
The trees are so much taller
And I feel so much smaller
The moon is twice as lonely
And the stars are half as bright
Papa, how I love you
Papa, how I need you
Papa, how I miss you
Kissing me goodnight

You Needed Me
Anne Murray
I cried a tear, you wiped it dry
I was confused, you cleared my mind
I sold my soul, you bought it back for me
And held me up and gave me dignity
Somehow you needed me
You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me, you needed me
And I can’t believe it’s you
I can’t believe it’s true
I needed you and you were there
And I’ll never leave, why should I leave?
I’d be a fool ’cause I finally found someone who really cares
You held my hand when it was cold
When I was lost you took me home
You gave me hope when I was at the end
And turned my lies back into truth again
You even called me “friend”
You gave me strength to stand alone again
To face the world out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me, you needed me
You needed me, you needed me
