One question writers are often asked is, where you get your ideas. Well, this is different than who influences us. I’ve been influenced by the Nancy Drew series. Stephen King and Clive Barker are influences as well as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. But my ideas come from life around me.
People watching is part creative work and part hobby. We all have strange behaviours. Habits developed over our lives and experiences. Most we have no idea we’re doing.
Then we have our attitudes – the good, bad, ugly, and ridiculous. Personal behaviours that are ingrained in our psyche, our nature. Do we think of others? Do we react in anger first? Practice self-control or walk through life wearing blinders.
These become part of a writer’s arsenal. Observations to develop our characters, making them real for our readers. Beware though, our characters are fictional, but you may have inspired us. Inspired us to ______ – fictionally.
Writer’s revenge.
Writer’s right.
The best part…you’ll never now.
