Reader Time: Why should people read?

pic of my reading corner

I’m still surprised when I hear of people who say they don’t read. HUH? Really? How can you not read?

Oh, have no time. It takes too much of my time. Too long. Too short. Boring. Not worth the money. Duds. Rather see the movie. Can’t be very good if not being made into a movie. Rather be doing something else. Too much like school work…read enough in school.

HUH? Really?

Oh, do read magazines…sometimes.

HUH?

Yeah, I’ll never understand those who don’t read. Probably as much as they will never understand why I have a review pile of books a mile high, a fun reading pile another mile high, and yet I still can’t pass a bookstore without going in…nine times out of ten coming out with either a book(s) for me or daughter.

I find reading exciting. Escaping. Daydreaming. Prompts to my own ideas. And there you have it…I started writing because I read Nancy Drew.

I know I’m not alone with that one. I’ve heard of too many writer friends who wrote their own mysteries after the style and after reading Nancy. She was smart, daring, leader of her friends, sure she had a boyfriend but they weren’t a stupid couple.

Watching the TV show with Pamela Sue Martin (Parker Stevenson and Shaun Cassidy as The Hardy Boys) didn’t take the reading away from me. Now I had an updated version who was more than what I found originally.

Let alone Miss Ainsworth who introduced me to The Famous Five. Kids going off by themselves and falling into such adventures.

I’m not a Tolkien reader. Sorry, his style never connected with me. But I did find Terry Brooks who took me on fantasy epic adventures. Magic?  Oh yes!

Science Fiction? Okay, that was Star Trek original TV series. I started slowly. Now I can appreciated the genre more.

I still remember reading ORCA after seeing the movie with Richard Harris. Oh, the movie left out so much. Right there is what’s fun with books…they have more inside than any movie can capture. Exceptions? Sure…The LOTR movies I liked better. Harry Potter books and movies both work.

Back to the subject question…why should people read?

To escape. To slow down. Great way to spend time with family. Sure, you might all be in your own chairs reading different books, but you’re together sharing new discoveries and old favourites.

Perfect quiet time. Easy to do anywhere. Bored easily? Hey, eBooks carry multiple books and they keep your place.

Nothing’s better than being all cozy and curled up with a book and waking up realizing you just had a catnap. You’re recharged.

Yes, fictional characters feel real. You like daytime dramas? Find a series that gives the same without repeating every week and taking forever to reach a conclusion…get it in one book and the next gives it to you again, all new.

You can learn from books. Fiction and non-fiction. People interactions. New places. New ideas for your next vacation.

But the best part…escape, quiet, recharge…all alone.

Hmmm, maybe that’s why some people don’t read. Not wanting to be alone? I’ve seen joggers nod to another. Swimmers aren’t always alone in pools. Gyms are filled. Books? Haven’t really ever seen someone at a library interrupt someone reading to talk about what they’re doing.

I don’t know. I’ll never understand.

I do know one thing…if someone tells you they don’t read, they’re not going to become your reader on a simple ‘sure, I’ll read your book.’ They’re just being nice. Nice is good.

Readers are better 😉
