Poet/Artist: What’s with pastels

  1. I love them
  2. I have no idea how to use them

It’s almost like bringing my two favourite mediums together – crayons and paints. These crayon-like sticks can be shaded and blended and mixed to new colours. They’re rich in colour and their texture is thicker and messier.

They’re as difficult as anything to master. Not that I can claim to master anything with art materials. I’ve learned to give myself permission to try and to fail. Permission to risk.

And the only way to learn is to practice. To keep working with the material. Try different edge angles and different pressures. Would you believe I’ve just thought I should use the pastels during my daily drawing exercises? Never occurred to me before now. I always go to one core pencil for this. It would be just as easy to use a pastel.

Remember – give yourself permission to try. And if you have any suggestions, I’m all ears.
