Editor: Dreading edits

There are days I’m nervous to start an author’s edits. Most times I’m completely wrong as the edits are minimal and easy. I wonder why I’m even editing.

Sometimes, I’m afraid I’m changing the author’s voice. Does this particular story work better with the telling narrative? Too many POV changes?

Am I using a butcher knife and not a paring knife?

I love being part of the team toward publication. It just scares me.

Too much dread can lock a writer up and it can lock an editor up, too.

Can cause a timing backlog. Adding to the stress already in place.

The difference is that someone is waiting for my input. Needing me to get the job done.

If only it was always so easy.
